Get Your License to Shred!

At Banff Sunshine, we focus on SAFETY and FUN. In pursuit of safe skiing and riding for all, this April 1st we are pleased to announce the introduction of our “license to shred” program.

As of April first, all guests of Banff Sunshine must complete a mandatory skills assessment prior to loading and of our lifts. As you unload the Sunshine Gondola you will be warmly greeted by our friendly Sunshine team member. The testing area will be set up to the skiers left hand side of the gondola’s top terminal in the Village.

The ski assessment will consist of:

·       A quick refresher, followed by a pop quiz on the Alpine Responsibility Code.

·       A quick game of red-light green light, to prove you can stop on your preferred sliding device.

·       A pillion Ski/Ride test where you will prove that you can safely avoid obstacles.

All skiers and snowboarders who successful complete the compulsory ski/snowboard exam will be given a License to Shred. As of April 1st, 2025, Skiers and Snowboards must always keep their license on them while skiing and snowboarding at Banff Sunshine. We recommend Shred Licences be stored in an easy to access pocket. License checks will be spontaneously performed throughout the resort.

Skier and snowboarders who fail to successfully complete the exam will be required to take an introductory lesson to learn how to safely stop and avoid obstacles.

This April first, don’t be fooled….Happy April Fool’s Day, from all of us at Banff Sunshine Village.

This joke was inspired by the history of Snowboarding at Banff Sunshine Village. Back in the 1985 when snowboarding first arrived, we at Sunshine required all snowboarders to prove they could stop and unload lifts prior to granting them their lift pass.
