Tips for Skiing the POW!

In the Canadian Rockies, spring is POWDER season. Traditionally the months of March and April are our snowiest months of the ski and snowboard season. So far this month we have seen over 110 cm of our famous smoke dry powder land on our slopes, and March isn’t over yet!

Month to date, we have been spoiled with fresh snow dusting our mountain almost daily. Over 3 feet of snow has been added to our cumulative snowfall total, which nicely pads our base as we head into our spring ski and snowboard season. This year we’ll be skiing and riding our wide open slopes all the way until Slush Cup Monday, happening Monday, May 19th, 2025.

Learning to ride powder, takes a little practice. Skiing in powder requires some technique adaptation. To help you ski powder like a pro, we connected with senior instructors from our Sunshine Village Ski and Snowboard School for tips to help you keep your tips up in the spring pow.

6 Tips for Skiing in Powder:

1. Keep Equal Pressure on Both Feet– In powder, it can be frustrating when one of your skis runs away on you. The trick is to think about keeping equal pressure on both of your feet to stay grounded in the deep snow.

2. Think Round Turns – When powder skiing, think about making nice round turns as you cruise down the fall line. In deep snow, when you turn your skis too quickly, you might find yourself faceplanting in the fresh powder.

3. Keep Your Core Engaged – When skiing powder, you’ll notice that the condition of the snow may vary quickly, especially when the light is flat. Keeping your core engaged will help you stay balanced as you carve up the mountain.

4. Narrow Your Stance – When skiing powder, you’ll want to narrow your stance. This will help you keep control of your skis in the deep snow and will aid you in floating through the pow.

5. Ski a Fatter Ski – Treat yourself to a pair of fat skis, (you can rent a pair from our Salomon demo tent,) to have the most fun on a deep powder day. The fatter the ski, the better you’ll float on top of the glorious fresh snow.

6. Book a Lesson – Practice makes perfect, to up your powder skiing book a lesson with one of our ski and snowboard pros. They’ll be able to give you individualized tips to help you master the slopes.
