Carter Edwards’ Stunning Aurora Photo Wins #IkonPass Contest

Banff Sunshine’s On-Mountain Photographer and Content Creator, Carter Edwards, has been crowned the winner of the #IkonPass community's favorite snowy shot contest, thanks to his captivating image captured at Sunshine Village's iconic Holy Bowly course. The photograph showcases a skier hitting the lip of the famous terrain park feature, all under the mesmerizing glow of the Aurora Borealis.  

As the iconic Holy Bowly terrain park takes center stage in Edwards’ stunning photo, it also highlights the unforgettable experiences that can be had on the slopes and beyond. Carters’ ability to capture the perfect moment, combined with the awe-inspiring beauty of the Aurora, makes this a truly remarkable image. 

Edwards has been honing his photography skills for over five years, diving into the craft full-time just two years ago. While shooting on this beautiful night, he used a Sony a7rV camera and alternated between a Sigma 24-70 mm and 50 mm lens.  

We asked Edwards what inspired him to capture the Aurora Borealis that night and he stated that, “It was mostly just time and place, the fact that we were with such good homies, at Sunshine in the Holy Bowly build, with a crazy strong Aurora, that’s probably a once in a lifetime experience and I’m not sure will ever happen again.” 

Despite the shoot's spontaneous nature, Edwards overcame challenges such as limited lighting equipment and tight timing. He mentioned that “Luckily, I do know my gear well and was able to compensate for lack of light a few different ways that helped make the edit possible! Timing was also tough, but the athletes nailed it, and we barely missed an opportunity.” Which is a testament to his skill and adaptability as a photographer.
