Legends of Banff National Park: The Boss and Split Lip

High in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, where alpine lakes shimmer and wildflowers bloom in summer—and where snow settles deep in winter—you’ll find more than just breathtaking views and world-class skiing. You’re also sharing the mountain with two of Banff National Park’s most legendary locals: The Boss and Split Lip, iconic grizzly bears whose stories are as mighty as the peaks they roam.

These grizzlies aren’t just part of the ecosystem—they’re symbols of the rugged wilderness that makes Banff Sunshine Village so special. Here’s what makes these two bears stand out.

The Boss: Bear 122

Meet Bear 122, better known as The Boss. He’s a true heavyweight of the wild—a dominant male grizzly who has patrolled the Bow Valley for well over a decade. Weighing more than 600 pounds, The Boss is one of the largest and most recognizable bears in the region.

With his impressive size and calm confidence, The Boss has earned his title. He’s known for his ability to navigate the busy terrain of Banff National Park, crossing roads, railways, and even using wildlife overpasses with remarkable skill. He’s elusive, powerful, and—most importantly—essential to the health of the regional grizzly population.

As the area’s most prolific breeding male, The Boss has fathered an estimated 70% of the cubs currently roaming the valleys and ridgelines of Banff. His presence is a strong indicator of a thriving ecosystem—one where wildlife and people coexist with respect and care.

Split Lip: Bear 136

Every legend has a challenger. For The Boss, it’s Split Lip—Bear 136.

Slightly smaller in stature but just as bold, Split Lip is named for a visible scar on his lower jaw. That split lip—likely the result of a territorial battle—gives him a rugged, unmistakable appearance. And while he may not outweigh The Boss, Split Lip has carved out his own reputation in the Rockies.

He’s often spotted closer to the town of Banff and around transportation corridors, showing a boldness and adaptability that sets him apart. His movements reflect a bear navigating a changing landscape—one shaped by both nature and human presence.

In recent years, sightings of Split Lip have increased, and his growing presence in key territories suggests a possible shift in dominance. Could he be next to take the crown? Only time (and trail cameras) will tell.

A Wild Balance

The Boss and Split Lip represent something much bigger than just two grizzlies. Their story is a reminder of the delicate balance that exists between nature and adventure in Banff National Park.

At Banff Sunshine Village, we’re fortunate to operate in a region where wildlife still thrives. That said, with privilege comes responsibility. While the chances of spotting these bears are slim—as they tend to steer clear of busy areas—it’s important to stay bear-aware:

  • Carry bear spray and know how to use it.
  • Hike and explore in groups.
  • Make noise while on the trail.
  • Never approach or feed wildlife.
  • Stay on marked trails and follow all Parks Canada advisories.

By respecting these guidelines, we help protect both visitors and the wildlife that call this area home.
